India's declining fertility rate (at 2.59), now only slightly higher than that of the other countries, is part of a global trend of lower population growth. A drop in fertility rate is due to both medical factor and external factors —like late marriages, more career orientation or reluctance to have children in general. Rapid lifestyle changes are also impacting fertility in urban areas of India today.
