Step-by-step IVF tests and treatment procedure to get pregnant

Infertility has become very common in today’s world. 1 out of 6 couples is unable to conceive even after many years of marriage. And we very well know that women alone are not the reason for the unsuccessful pregnancy. The modern and hectic lifestyle, stress, diabetes, etc are the major reasons that lead to infertility.  If you’re unable to get pregnant, then IVF is what you will think about, right? Since many women have got successful results after the IVF treatment.

However, to get a successful result, you need to be patient enough because IVF treatment is not just a one-day treatment. A subject has to go many tests and treatment procedures based on their physical conditions-or health, age, hormones, blood pressure, etc.  So, here is the step-by-step IVF treatment process for the successful pregnancy.

Step1:  Day1 of your fertility period-

The first day1 you get fertilized is the first official day of your IVF treatment. Since everyone is blessed with unique bodies, your IVF treatment nurse will help you know in identifying the day1.

Step2:  Activating and stimulating your ovaries-

The activation or stimulation phase begins from the day1.  Normally, your ovaries produce 1 egg in a natural monthly cycle.  You will be asked to take the prescribed medicine for 8-14 days to foster the follicles in your ovaries to produce more eggs.

Your fertility specialist will prescribe medicines specific to your treatment plan and your body.  It is basically through the mode of injections, which can differ from 1-2 for the process, or 1-2/day.  It sounds terrible but, your IVF treatment nurse will be there to help you and will show you exactly how and where the injection is to be given.  You can even get your spouse involved and watch and learn together to do it correctly. You will be acquainted with it and will be an expert in short time.

The hormones that are basically used in medications to activate or, to stimulate the follicles include- Follicle stimulating hormones (FSH) and Luteinizing hormones (LH). The hormones are naturally developed in your body. The eggs are already present in the body; the medication arouses the natural levels for more egg production.

Your IVF specialist keeps an eye on your ovaries and how the follicles are progressing with blood tests and ultrasounds. If required, your medications will be rectified. You also need to go through some transvaginal ultrasounds. You will be comforted and supported throughout these entire procedures, and you will feel comfortable with the process.

“Trigger Injection for IVF”- You will be observed more consistently towards the end of the boosting phase to grant the “trigger injection” with perfection.  The trigger injection helps the eggs get ready for ovulation. Your nurse will help you know the exact time to shot the trigger injection.

Step3: Egg retrieval-

Egg “pick-up” or Egg retrieval is a hospital day test method where the eggs are gathered from your ovaries. An anesthetist will help you prepare for general anesthetic. While you fall asleep the procedure will take place for about 20-30 minutes. The fertility specialist uses the latest ultrasound technology to guide a needle into each ovary. It’s a very delicate and fragile process where every millimeter counts.

Eggs can’t be seen with the naked eye, they’re collected within the follicles inside your ovaries. The specialist removes fluid from the follicles that appear like they’ve grown enough to have an egg inside. Your fertility expert should have a complete idea from your ultrasounds how many eggs are collected and how nay eggs were there before retrieval. Basically, 8-9 eggs are collected.

The recovery procedure takes about 30 minutes. Although you’ll be able to walk down on your own, it’s better to have someone to drive you home.

Step4: The sperm-

If you’re planning to use fresh sperm, then the male will have to produce a sample in the morning of the egg retrieval. The IVF specialists and scientists will keep the sperm ready in the lab for those who are using a sperm donor. The sperm is classified using 4 different levels of quality. The best sperm is selected and will be introduced to the eggs.

Step5: Fertilization-

Your IVF fertility specialist provides the scientists the eggs they have retrieved. The scientists will use a powerful microscope to identify the eggs. The eggs and sperm are kept in a tube so that they can naturally find each other and get fertilized. It’s crucial for quick eggs fertilization.

Step6:  Embryo development-

When the eggs are fertilized by sperm, it becomes an embryo. To ensure the perfect development and growth of the embryo, the scientists put it in a special incubator. Perfect growing conditions are created using a mix of amino acids, exactly as your body would use to nurture the embryo. The embryo will be kept under a close observation of scientists for more than 5-6 days.

Step7: Embryo transfer-

Once the embryo is developed in the lab, It will be ready to be transferred into your uterus. The procedure will be explained by the nurses. Before transferring the embryo, you need to drink lots of water to ensure that you have a full bladder.  Ultrasound technology is used for the perfect positioning of the embryo. The procedure for transferring the embryo is a very simple process, similar to Pap smear. It will take only 5 minutes, and no anesthesia is required. You can get up normally and even continue with your task. Even if you stand or go to the toilet, the embryo cannot fall out.

Step8: The final blood test-

Two weeks after the embryo is transferred, you’ll have to go for a blood test for measuring your levels of the hormones hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin. hCG in your bloodstream means a positive pregnancy test. The period between the embryo transfer and the blood test is called as the “two-week wait” (2WW), and it’s impossible, not to be anxious about the result.
